Is Shift at Midnight crossplay?
Shift at Midnight is partially crossplay. If you are on Xbox (console) or PC Game Pass, you can team up with each other. If you bought the game on Steam, you are limited to playing with other Steam players for now.
What crossplay works today
Xbox Series X|S consoles and the PC version of Game Pass share the same online pool, so a friend on a console can join a friend playing through the PC Game Pass app. This is the cross-platform pairing developer Bun Muen shipped at launch.
Because the console and PC Game Pass builds talk to the same services, invites, sessions and progress line up cleanly between those two platforms. If your trio is on Xbox plus Game Pass, you will never hit a wall.
Where crossplay does not work
Steam is a separate instance. A Steam player can only match and co-op with other Steam players. There is no bridge between Steam and the Xbox / Game Pass ecosystem at launch.
If your group is split across Steam and Xbox, the practical fix is for the Steam players to also claim the Game Pass version (it is included with a subscription) or for everyone to standardize on one store.
How to start a cross-platform co-op session
From the main menu choose Co-op, then Create Shift to become the host or Join with the host's invite code. On Xbox and PC Game Pass the invite travels through the Xbox friends system, so accept it from the Xbox app or the console Guide.
Once the lobby is full (up to three players) the host starts the night. The host's save drives the campaign, so everyone lands on the same shift number. Cross-store invites only resolve inside the Xbox / Game Pass bubble.
Known limitations at launch
Cross-platform play is limited to Xbox console and PC Game Pass. There is no Steam-to-Xbox path and no crossplay with any other console or store. If you hoped to play seamlessly with a Steam-owning friend, that is not available yet.
We track official patch notes and will update this page if Bun Muen widens crossplay support. Until then, settle on one ecosystem up front so your group is never stuck in two separate lobbies.
